Some helpful tips.
For punch needle, the fabric must be in a hoop.
Always hold the needle perpendicular to the fabric and barely lift the
needle off the fabric as you create the loops. This is VERY important!
Drape the thread coming out of the handle over the back of the hand holding
the needle.
Place the needle down on the fabric where you will make your first stitch.
Make sure that the scoop of the needle is facing in the same direction as
you are going to punch. Push the needle down into the fabric as far as it
will go. Gently pull the needle back up through the fabric. Do not lift the
needle off the fabric.
Drag the tip of the needle to the next stitch which should be approximately
one needle's width from the previous stitch. Keep following the line of the
printed outline on the fabric and punch.
As you follow the line, turn the hoop as you go. Always make sure that you
are punching with the front of the needle in the direction that you are
going. If you do not your stitches will pull out.
Punch back and forth, side to side, up and down, whatever
translates best, and leave some white space (about the width of the needle)
between the rows. If the stitches are punched too close together, the
fabric will "bump" up and be bulky.
When you are getting to the end of the thread in the needle,
push gently down on the stitch that is last formed with your finger to stop
it from pulling out. Pull the needle slowly out of the fabric without
letting go of that stitch until an inch or two of the thread come from the
tip of the needle, and snip off the thread right at the fabric. Re-thread
your needle and start punching again right after the last stitch.
When you finish an area, re-thread the needle with another
color thread and repeat, as above. |
